Secrets ways to save at in-store supermarket bakeries

It was a Reddit post that gave me the idea to look into supermarket in-store bakeries for this week’s Supermarket Sleuths.
A Redditor asked about the best time to shop at their local shop to ensure “the best chance of what I want being available.”
Then some like to take advantage of markdowns when in-store bakeries are clearing out their items for the day.

A supermarket worker said 10am is when supermarket in-store bakeries will be fully stocked with all of the customer’s favourites.
“Normally around 9:00-10:00am!” they explained on Reddit.
‘That’s when all the white bread is supposed to be out along with fresh donuts, pastries, and artisanal bread. Grain, wholemeal, and low gi bread will usually be coming out during that time too. Every other product just depends on when we get the chance to make them (cookies, cakes etc).’

A spokesperson for Woolworths told 9honey markdowns are implemented from time to time to “minimise food waste” but wasn’t able to give specific times.
“The availability of markdowns will vary from day to day and store to store based on stock levels and demand,” they explained.
“While our most popular in-store sweet bakery treats are our Dreamy Choc Chip Cookies, the Happy Birthday Chocolate Drip Cake and our Fresh Donuts Cinnamon, the most popular breads in our bakery range are our 35hr Sourdough White Loaf and Soft White Loaf,” their spokesperson shared.
“Bread and bakery items continue to remain a staple for Australian households, with our in-store bakeries providing quality products for our customers daily.
A spokesperson for Coles also didn’t give specific times for markdowns but mentioned that in addition to these, any unsold edible bakery items are donated to their food rescue partners SecondBite and Foodbank. Woolworths also does this with OzHarvest, Foodbank and FareShare.
A Coles spokesperson told 9honey their in-store bakery products are loved by customers.
“We are proud of our bakery selection, from artisan-style breads by Laurent, hot plate products such as our Coles Bakery Pancakes and flat breads, to those looking to indulge in a sweet treat with our cookies, we offer high quality and great value bakery choices for our customers,” they added.
Their top sellers include their six-pack soft round rolls and round hamburger rolls as well as their Coles three-pack croissants which are “extremely popular” and sell over 100,000 packs a week.

“Our Coles bakery team is always working hard on innovative new products; we recently launched our Coles Chocolate chip pancakes in selected stores and Coles four-pack Mini Wholemeal Vegemite Scrolls which are a great new lunchbox filler for hungry tummies, while a café-style Coles Finest All-Butter Croissant (two-pack) also recently hit our shelves and Biscoff lovers have been excited to taste our Biscoff two-pack Doughnuts,” the spokesperson added.
Redditers report the best times to grab a markdown bargain at Woolworths and Coles in-store bakeries are at around 3pm and 6pm.
When it comes to exciting new products, Woolworths is releasing a new limited edition Carrot Cake Cheesecake from August 22 for $22. Their Halloween bakery products will hit shelves from October 16.
Coles has already released their Coles Classic Christmas Fruit Mince Pies for the year, despite Christmas still being over four months away.
