Chocolate Recall Sparks Nationwide Warning

A recall has been issued for several hundred units of Authentik Fudge’s chocolate fudge with nuts products because of potential mold growth contamination.
According to a press release posted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a recall was announced on Wednesday for 840 units of the Canadian-based manufacturer’s Chocolate Fudge with Nuts products, which are branded as “Montreal Fudge” on its packaging.
According to an image of the recalled items posted along with the release, the fudge items were sold in a 5.6-ounce box with an orange top and a white printed background. The front of the box features an image of three fudge pieces along with the words, “individually wrapped.”

The items were distributed to retailers between June 19 and June 20 and were sold in select Marshalls and TJ Maxx locations across 40 states. States with TJ Maxx locations that sold the recalled items are Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Marshalls stores that sold the fudge product are in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The recall was initiated after a consumer complained to the manufacturer about mold pieces that were found inside their unopened box of fudge. The release from the FDA said that the company also found “some remaining unpacked sealed products at the manufacturing site that had beginning signs of mold.” There have been no illnesses reported to date in connection with the recall.

Three lot numbers, which are listed on the back of the box, are included in the recall:
“Consumers who have purchased those affected products are urged to destroy them or to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the release said.

A separate recall was issued this week for slices of chocolate cake manufactured by Kalo Foods LLC after it was found that the desserts were packaged with incorrect labels that do not list that the items contain soy, a major allergen. The recall is classified as a Class II risk by the FDA, meaning it’s a “situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
